I may not be able to fully answer here, due to the scope of our human experiences. My practice is to be mindful of the sensations of the breath/body as I explore whatever is at hand. They say that the body never lies. 🙂
Before I start the process of discerning the truth of my information/thoughts and feelings, I allow the mind and body to become still and calm. When the breath becomes slow and smooth, I know that the mind/body is in a more balanced state.
This is when I bring up what it is, that I want to gain a deeper insight into. I can reflect on the vavious aspects of subject matter, ask differnet questions about it and feel the breath and body respond to it.
